Terms of Service

Last updated: March 16, 2026

These Terms of Service ("Terms") govern your access to and use of the Plaza API and related services ("Service") provided by Plaza ("Plaza," "we," "us," or "our"), accessible at plaza.fyi. By creating an account, accessing, or using the Service, you agree to be bound by these Terms. If you do not agree, do not use the Service.

1. Description of Service

Plaza provides a geospatial data API serving OpenStreetMap ("OSM") planet data. The Service includes REST and PlazaQL query interfaces for geocoding, routing, isochrones, full-text search, distance matrices, and other geospatial operations. All data processing runs within Plaza's infrastructure — no third-party data services are involved in query execution.

2. Account Registration and API Keys

To use the Service, you must create an account and obtain an API key. You may register using a magic link sent to your email address, OAuth authentication (Google or GitHub), or a passkey.

You are responsible for maintaining the confidentiality of your API key and for all activity that occurs under your account. You must notify us immediately at support@plaza.fyi if you believe your API key has been compromised. Plaza reserves the right to disable any API key at any time if we reasonably believe it has been compromised or is being misused.

You may not share, publish, or embed your API key in client-side code where it can be extracted by third parties.

3. Acceptable Use

You agree not to:

  • Abuse, disrupt, or place unreasonable load on the Service
  • Circumvent, bypass, or attempt to defeat rate limits, authentication, or other access controls
  • Resell, sublicense, or provide direct pass-through access to the Plaza API as your own product (building applications that use Plaza as a backend is permitted)
  • Use the Service for any unlawful purpose or in violation of any applicable law or regulation
  • Reverse engineer, decompile, or attempt to extract the source code of Plaza's proprietary systems
  • Use automated means to create accounts or generate API keys in bulk
  • Misrepresent your identity or affiliation when creating an account

Plaza reserves the right to throttle, suspend, or terminate access for any account engaging in conduct we determine, in our sole discretion, to be abusive or in violation of these Terms.

4. Data Licensing and Attribution

OpenStreetMap Data

The geospatial data served through the Plaza API is derived from OpenStreetMap and is made available under the Open Database License (ODbL) v1.0. You must comply with the ODbL when using data obtained through the Service. In particular:

  • Attribution required. You must credit "© OpenStreetMap contributors" in any product or service that uses data obtained from Plaza. See openstreetmap.org/copyright for full attribution guidelines.
  • Share-Alike. If you create a Derivative Database (as defined by the ODbL) from data obtained through Plaza, you must release that Derivative Database under the ODbL or a compatible license. Normal use of API responses — caching results, displaying data in applications, storing geocoding results — does not create a Derivative Database. Share-Alike applies only if you aggregate API responses to reconstruct a substantial portion of the OpenStreetMap database.
  • You may cache and redistribute Plaza API responses, provided you comply with the ODbL attribution and share-alike requirements.

Plaza Service

While the underlying OSM data is open, the Plaza API service itself — including its infrastructure, query engine, documentation, branding, user interface, and proprietary optimizations — is the property of Plaza and is not open source. These Terms grant you no rights to Plaza's proprietary technology beyond API access as described herein.

5. Billing and Payments

Plans and Pricing

Plaza offers the following plan tiers:

  • Free: 500 standard requests per day and 10 premium requests per day, no charge
  • Pro 100K: 100,000 included requests per month, $50/month
  • Pro 300K: 300,000 included requests per month, $150/month
  • Pro 1M: 1,000,000 included requests per month, $500/month
  • Enterprise: Custom volume pricing, contact sales@plaza.fyi

Premium endpoints (routing, isochrone, and matrix) count as 4 requests against your included allocation.

Payment Processing

Payments are processed through Stripe. By subscribing to a paid plan, you authorize Plaza to charge your credit or debit card on file for recurring subscription fees and any applicable overage charges. You are responsible for keeping your payment information current.

Overages

If you exceed your plan's included request allocation, additional requests are billed at the on-demand rate specified in your plan. Standard endpoints are billed at $0.50 per 1,000 requests. Premium endpoints are billed at $1.50 per 1,000 requests.

Enterprise Invoicing

Enterprise customers may elect to pay by invoice with net-30 payment terms, subject to credit approval. Late payments may incur interest at the lesser of 1.5% per month or the maximum rate permitted by law.

Free Tier Limits

Free tier accounts are hard-limited to 500 standard requests per day and 10 premium requests per day. Requests beyond these limits will be rejected until the next day (midnight UTC) or until you upgrade to a paid plan.

Refunds

Plaza does not provide refunds for partial months of service or for unused request allocations. If you cancel a paid plan, you will retain access through the end of your current billing period.

6. Rate Limits and Fair Use

Each plan tier includes rate limits designed to ensure fair access for all users. Current rate limits are published in our documentation. Plaza reserves the right to adjust rate limits at any time. If your use case requires higher limits, contact sales@plaza.fyi to discuss Enterprise options.

Sustained activity designed to consume capacity beyond your plan tier's rate limits — including distributed request patterns intended to evade per-key throttling — constitutes a violation of these Terms.

7. Service Availability

Plaza provides the Service on a best-effort basis. We aim for high availability but do not guarantee uninterrupted or error-free operation. We may perform maintenance, deploy updates, or experience outages that temporarily affect Service availability.

No SLA is provided under these Terms. Enterprise customers may negotiate a separate Service Level Agreement with defined uptime commitments, remedies, and support response times. Contact sales@plaza.fyi for details.

Plaza is not liable for any damages resulting from Service downtime, data unavailability, or degraded performance.

8. Intellectual Property

Plaza's name, logo, website design, documentation, query engine, API design, and all other proprietary elements of the Service are owned by Plaza and protected by applicable intellectual property laws. These Terms grant you no license to use Plaza's trademarks or branding without prior written consent.

Nothing in these Terms restricts your rights under the ODbL with respect to the OpenStreetMap data itself.

9. Termination

By You

You may terminate your account at any time by contacting support@plaza.fyi or through your account settings. Upon termination, your API keys will be deactivated and your access to the Service will cease.

By Plaza

Plaza may suspend or terminate your account at any time, with or without notice, if:

  • You violate these Terms
  • Your account is used for abusive, fraudulent, or unlawful activity
  • You fail to pay amounts owed under a paid plan
  • We discontinue the Service (with reasonable notice)

For violations, termination may be immediate. For other reasons, we will make reasonable efforts to provide advance notice.

Effect of Termination

Upon termination, your right to access the Service ceases immediately. Plaza may delete your account data in accordance with our Privacy Policy. Any amounts owed through the date of termination remain due and payable.

10. Limitation of Liability

To the maximum extent permitted by applicable law, Plaza shall not be liable for any indirect, incidental, special, consequential, or punitive damages, or any loss of profits, revenue, data, or business opportunities, arising out of or related to your use of or inability to use the Service, regardless of the theory of liability.

Plaza's total aggregate liability for all claims arising out of or related to these Terms or the Service shall not exceed the greater of (a) the amounts you paid to Plaza in the twelve (12) months preceding the claim or (b) one hundred U.S. dollars ($100).

11. Disclaimer of Warranties

The Service is provided "as is" and "as available" without warranties of any kind, whether express, implied, or statutory. Plaza disclaims all warranties, including but not limited to implied warranties of merchantability, fitness for a particular purpose, accuracy, and non-infringement.

Plaza does not warrant that the Service will be uninterrupted, error-free, secure, or free of harmful components. Plaza does not warrant the accuracy, completeness, or reliability of any data returned through the API. OpenStreetMap data is community-contributed and may contain errors, omissions, or inaccuracies.

12. Indemnification

You agree to indemnify, defend, and hold harmless Plaza and its officers, directors, employees, and agents from any claims, liabilities, damages, losses, and expenses (including reasonable attorneys' fees) arising out of or related to your use of the Service, your violation of these Terms, or your violation of any applicable law or third-party rights.

13. Governing Law and Disputes

These Terms are governed by the laws of the State of Delaware, USA, without regard to its conflict of laws principles. Any disputes arising out of or related to these Terms or the Service shall be resolved exclusively in the state or federal courts located in the State of Delaware, and you consent to the personal jurisdiction of such courts.

14. Changes to These Terms

Plaza may modify these Terms at any time. When we make material changes, we will notify you by email at the address associated with your account at least thirty (30) days before the changes take effect. Your continued use of the Service after the effective date of any changes constitutes your acceptance of the revised Terms. If you do not agree to the revised Terms, you must stop using the Service and terminate your account.

15. General Provisions

  • Entire Agreement. These Terms, together with our Privacy Policy, constitute the entire agreement between you and Plaza regarding the Service.
  • Severability. If any provision of these Terms is held to be unenforceable, the remaining provisions shall continue in full force and effect.
  • Waiver. Plaza's failure to enforce any right or provision of these Terms shall not constitute a waiver of such right or provision.
  • Assignment. You may not assign or transfer these Terms without Plaza's prior written consent. Plaza may assign these Terms without restriction.
